Last week I had the pleasure of attending the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida Women of Distinction Luncheon, one of Tampa Bay’s longest-running celebrations of female leadership and community impact. Each year this event gathers hundreds of business and community leaders to recognize women who are making a difference right here in our region.
This year’s honorees were an inspiring group:
- Renee Dabbs– Founder and CEO of Renee Dabbs LLC
- Cynthia Johnson– Director of Pinellas County Economic Development
- Denise Jordan– Owner and President of LifeSpring Home Care of Tampa
- Jessica Muroff– CEO of United Way Suncoast
The program also recognized Evita Jackeline Garcia as the Woman of Promise, and celebrated Dr. Judy Genshaft with induction into the Women of Distinction Hall of Fame.
The stories of these women were impressive, but the moment that truly captured the room came from a much younger Girl Scout.
During the luncheon, we heard about a young scout who realized something was seriously wrong with her father. Instead of panicking, she calmly called 911, explained the situation to the dispatcher, and followed instructions until help arrived. Her quick thinking helped save her dad’s life.
The room erupted in applause when her story was shared. It was such a powerful reminder of what Girl Scouts is really about—teaching girls courage, confidence, and character.
I’ll confess something: I have always wished I had been a Girl Scout. I love the sense of adventure, the community, the badges, the leadership skills… and honestly, I would have taken the cookies very seriously too.
Watching that young girl be recognized alongside such accomplished women felt like a perfect full circle. Today’s honorees are leaders in our community, but every one of them started somewhere—learning the same values that Girl Scouts are teaching girls today.
If that brave young scout is any indication, the next generation of leaders is already well on its way.
And I think we can all agree… the future looks pretty bright.
