“EXPLORING THE LIFESTYLE AND GENEROSITY OF TAMPA BAY”

Follow Us

The Best Thing You Can Do Tonight? Head to the University of Tampa to enjoy one of our area’s literary treasures: The Lectores Public Reading Series. Organized by the university’s MFA in Creative Writing program, the twice-a-year series has featured readings by an impressive roster of authors, including Nick Flynn, Miranda July and George Saunders (Man Booker prize winner for the extraordinary Lincoln in the Bardo) — many of whom spend part of their time on the UT campus holding workshops for the MFA students.

Tonight is your last chance until June to enjoy a Lectores reading (named, by the way, after the lectores who read to Ybor City cigar rollers as they worked), and if Kevin Moffett‘s reading is as much fun as his website, I’d say it’s a must. His home page is a patchwork of sentences from his writings (“Lugo is gifted with willpower when he needs to be, but he rarely needs to be”; “They noticed the odor outside Tucson the day after they got married”; “One summer, the rabbits began dying”) that do just what I assume they’re meant to do: make you want to read more.

Moffett is the author of two books, Permanent Visitors, which won the John Simmons Short Fiction Award (judged by the aforementioned George Saunders), and Further Interpretations of Real-Life Events. His stories and essays have appeared in Tin House, American Short Fiction, The Believer, A Public Space, The Best American Short Stories and elsewhere. He has received the National Magazine Award, the Nelson Algren Award, the Pushcart Prize and a literature fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts. The Silent History, a collaborative multi-part narrative he co-wrote with Matt Derby and Eli Horowitz, was released as an app for mobile devices in 2012, and as a novel in 2014. It is currently in development at AMC.

Hear more of his sentences tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the University of Tampa’s Sykes Chapel, 401 W. Kennedy Blvd. in Tampa. Info here or at 813-257-3514.
