The Best Thing You Can Do Tonight: Celebrate 10 years of Radio Theatre at the Studio@620
What is it about live radio theatre? The feeling of being inside a good old-fashioned radio show? The surprisingly effective inventions of the sound effects man? The versatility of the voice actors? It’s all these and one more indispensable element: the appeal to our collective imagination — the fact that we can conjure up whole worlds with sound. If you haven’t yet experienced the Radio Theatre Project, tonight’s a great opportunity to do so — and raise money for a local theatrical gem. Tonight’s festivities begin with the first of two new episodes of “The Adventures of Noel Berlin,” the ever-hilarious “St. Pete noir” serial by Paul Wilborn and Matt Cowley. That’ll be followed by performances by jazz greats Nate Najar, John Lamb and James Suggs, plus Blue Roses with Paul Wilborn, Eugenie Bondurant, James Bowman and Matt Cowley. There will also be a tribute to the late, great RTP actor Ron Satlof. A second episode of “Noel Berlin” ends the evening, and there’ll be a special drink from Noel’s famous Joe the Bartender, along with light hors d’oeuvres. This fundraiser performance will help provide support for the rest of RTP’s season. Admission is $50. (Full disclosure: I’ve been a member of the RTP troupe in the past; I’m not performing tonight, but I can’t wait to enjoy the proceedings from the audience.) 7 p.m., Mon., Oct. 22, The Studio@620, 620-1st Ave. S., St. Petersburg, 727-895-6620, studio620.org
