Thanks to my colleague and pal Molly duPont Schaffer for alerting me to this unique and achingly timely video. It’s essentially just a husband and wife, Shaun and Abigail Bengson, singing what feels like a spontaneous response to being quarantined with their 3-year-old at Shaun’s parents home in Ohio. Her voice a distinctive quaver, Abigail sings lines that can turn on a dime from poignant to funny: “If your heart is breaking, I hope it’s breaking open/ And if your breath is shaking, I hope it’s shaking through / And I hope that you’ve watched a lot of really great television, like a lot of it…”

I’m probably a bit late to the party. This video has already received more than 100,000 views, the New York Times made it a Critic’s Pick in August, the Bengsons were already kind of underground famous for their Off-Broadway autobiographical show The Hundred Days, and this song was part of a show commissioned by the Actors Theatre of Louisville for their 2020-21 virtual season.
