The Best Thing You Can Do Today: Register to vote in the Nov. 6 election

If you haven’t yet registered, today is your last chance to make sure you can cast a vote in November. It’s already been an historic year in the U.S., and your vote on Nov. 6 — for governor, U.S. Senator, U.S. Congress, state legislators, statewide offices, judges, school board members and ballot measures —  will play a crucial role in determining the country’s, and Florida’s, future.

There are two ways you can register: in person at a county Supervisor of Elections offices before 5 p.m. today, or online today at RegistertoVoteFlorida.gov. Note that in order to register online, you’ll need either a Florida driver license (Florida DL) or Florida identification card (Florida ID card) issued by the Florida Department of Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles. If you don’t have either of these, you will have to vote in person, but the RegistertoVoteFlorida.gov site does allow you to pre-fill, print and sign the form and bring it with you to the Supervisor of Elections office.

To be eligible to vote, you need to be at least 18 years old; a U.S. citizen; a legal resident of Florida and of the county in which you seek to be registered; not a person who has been adjudicated mentally incapacitated with respect to voting in Florida or any other state without having the right to vote restored; and not a person who has been convicted of a felony without your civil rights having been restored. That last stipulation may change after the election, depending on what happens with Amendment 4, but these are the requirements at present.

And don’t go thinking your vote won’t count. The races for Governor and U.S. Senator are neck and neck, as are many of the statewide and local contests. In the highly polarized political moment we’re living in, just one vote could determine the difference between who wins and who loses. And that vote could be YOURS.
