“There’s nothing you can invent in a Florida novel that won’t eventually come true here,” Carl Hiaasen has said. A Florida treasure who probably would object forcefully to such a designation, Hiaasen has been writing about the Sunshine State since his father gave him a typewriter at age 6. And boy, has he made good use of typewriters (and various other writing implements) since. An incisive and funny columnist, a best-selling novelist and a prize-winning children’s author, Hiaasen has transcended categories and challenged copy editors (two “a”s, one “s,” right?) for decades, and tonight he comes to Tampa Theatre for its Limelight speakers series.
5/14, 7:30 p.m., Tampa Theatre, 711 N. Franklin St., Tampa. Tickets $55-$75, plus fees, tampatheatre.org.
