“EXPLORING THE LIFESTYLE AND GENEROSITY OF TAMPA BAY”

Follow Us

Here’s a good way to start off your week: Hit the beach this morning before it gets too hot, then hit a museum this afternoon when the thunderclouds begin to gather.

Plenty of museums are open today, with shows ranging from the triple threat at the Dali (Visual Magic, Goya and  Bronzes from the Vault) to the dynamic Abstract Expressionism survey at the Tampa Museum of Art.

But for a refreshing change of pace,  consider a visit to one of Tampa’s most striking museum spaces, the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts inside the “Cube” (the light-filled box adjacent to Rivergate Tower, aka the “Beercan Building”). The current show is well worth a visit in its own right. Curated by art star (and USF grad) Kalup Linzy, Contemporary Performance investigates all manner of variations on that word “performance” — how we perform gender, sexuality, class, race, identity — through “lens-based works” by 16 artists, including famous shape-shifters like Matthew Barney and Cindy Sherman as well as boundary-pushers from our local art scene like Selina Roman and Becky Flanders. Look forward to some mind-boggling fun. Mon.-Thurs., 11 a.m.-6 p.m.; Fri. 11 a.m.-7 p.m.; Sat.-Sun., 12-5 p.m. FMoPA, 400 N. Ashley Drive, Cube 200, Tampa, 813-221-2222, fmopa.org. Contemporary Performance runs through August, with a closing ceremony to be held Fri., Aug. 23 at 5 p.m., followed by a lecture featuring curator Kalup Linzy at 6 p.m.
