Registry Tampa Bay

Tampa Bay is event number one of over a dozen stops in the U.S.

In my previous life as Publisher of the duPont REGISTRY, my world was defined by the “Buyer’s Gallery of Fine Automobiles.” I’ve walked the lawns of the world’s most elite Concours d’Elegance, but last Saturday, April 25th, I traded the velvet ropes for the garage spirit. I was honored to serve as a judge for the kickoff of the 2026 Hot Wheels Legends Tour in Tampa.

The view of the crowd from the judges tent.

The Scene: Auto-Mania in Pinellas Park

The U.S. leg of this global search launched at the Pinellas Park Walmart Supercenter, and the atmosphere was electric. Supported by heavy hitters like Mobil 1, AriZona Beverage, and of course Walmart, the event drew a massive crowd of Tampa Bay gearheads and families.

A small sample of the incredible craftsmanship in the Tampa Bay Area.

This isn’t your typical car show. It is a deep immersion into “Blister Pack” reality—where every vehicle looks like it was plucked straight off a store shelf and blown up to 1:1 scale.

The magnificent seven judges. Tom duPont, Katie Pajestka Ronnie Setser, Talon Craft, , Evan Doel, Freddy “Tavarish” Hernandez, Charlie Angulo.

The Stakes: Immortality in 1/64 Scale

We faced a daunting task: evaluating 141 hopeful entries. The mission of the judging panel was to find the one custom build that embodied the three pillars of the Legends Tour:

  1. Authenticity: Does it feel like a Hot Wheels?
  2. Creativity: Have we seen this before? (Likely not.)
  3. Garage Spirit: The grit and heart of a home-built masterpiece.

The ultimate prize? The winner of the global tour will be inducted into the Hot Wheels Garage of Legends and immortalized as an official 1/64 scale die-cast model sold worldwide.

The Tampa Champion: The “MONTE MINO”

After hours of deliberation over radical builds and customized masterpieces, one vehicle rose to the top: the MONTE MINO.

The winner! The Mont MINO

A seamless, gravity-defying hybrid of a Chevy Monte Carlo and an El Camino, the Monte Mino captured the exact wild imagination the brand stands for. It’s a flawless execution of design that looks as good on the pavement as it will in a child’s (or collector’s) hand.

The Legends Tour will continue throughout the year, ending in November when Tampa’s champion will compete against more than 12 other winners to become the next Hot Wheels model in your collection. The Tampa winner will be a strong contender.

THE POWER OF THE DIE-CAST

GLOBAL DOMINANCE: Hot Wheels is the #1 selling toy in the world
PRODUCTION SPEED: 25 cars are produced every single second
THE HERITAGE: Over 10 billion models have been produced since 1968
HIGHEST PRICE: The most expensive model ever sold is the “Beach Bomb,” fetching a staggering sum of $72,000

The Team at the end of the day!
