I was introduced to LiFT Academy many years ago at their former campus. Having spent much of my life working with organizations that support individuals and families with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), I thought I knew what to expect.
Before I even made it inside, I was greeted in the parking lot by a huge smile and an eager-to-help attitude as someone directed me to our meeting location. Along the way, I encountered another new friend who found eye contact and speaking more challenging but welcomed me with a tiny, brave wave.
I sat through the presentation eager to get back on the tour and see what the classrooms felt like. I knew enough to know that how a classroom looks doesn’t matter nearly as much as how it feels.

And I fell in love with what I felt. The energy, the effort, and the determination of two moms who simply wanted more for their own children and all the children in their community who needed to be served.
It has been an honor and a privilege to watch LiFT grow. From its humble but heartfelt beginnings in a church to its current campus in the former YMCA, LiFT continues to inspire me. And while the campus has grown into a state-of-the-art facility, it’s the people who make the difference.
Over the years, I’ve attended the Holiday Market, where I’ve seen the entrepreneurial spirit firsthand (and purchased some amazing gifts!). I’ve been fortunate to celebrate the Kentucky Derby a few times at LiFT Your Spirits, and, most importantly, I’ve enjoyed the meaningful relationships created through LiFT’s partnerships in our community.
One of my favorite memories was volunteering at a holiday gathering, where we danced the night away, enjoyed a much-appreciated meal, and celebrated with plenty of holiday crafts. It was one of those evenings that reminds you what community is all about.
This year will be my third time attending the Rise Awards, and while it’s tough to choose a favorite LiFT event, I think this one wins!
There is something so special about the genuine gratitude the students show to the sponsors and community members who support them. There is the opportunity to honor individuals whose accomplishments go far beyond what many of us might imagine possible. And perhaps my favorite part is the chance to learn even more about what LiFT Academy does for its learners and the difference it makes in their lives.
I can’t wait to see you there!
Molly
