Pam Cederquist was born and raised in NYC and grew up in theater. A film director and writer, her travels take her from Los Angeles to Taos, but NYC is her muse. Gardens: In late April, the Sakura Matsuri Cherry Blossom Festival at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens is a beautiful way to start your day.
Theater Unplugged: “Sleep No More” presented by McKittrick Hotel Emursive. It’s environmental theatre at its best. Taking place on 5 floors of an old hotel, you are turned loose and can follow any actor on their journey. Then take a break at the bar and head back out. You’ll need comfortable shoes for this one. And be warned. All audience members wear masks.
Performing Arts: If you’re a fan of the Bard, “The Winter’s Tale” or “Twelfth Night” at The Theatre for a New Audience will keep you entertained. Anything at St Ann’s Warehouse in Dumbo or the Brooklyn Academy of Music puts on is bound to be spectacular. Get your groove on at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, Jazz at Lincoln Center.
Family Fun: National Geographic’s “Encounter” is an immersive experience that will keep you on your feet. It’s a virtual reality journey beneath the oceans of the world where you’re surrounded by sea creatures. This one’s fun for all ages. You’ll be on your feet moving from room to room so comfortable shoes are recommended.
Art: For art, my go to is the Metropolitan Museum. If you’re interested in smaller galleries, 47 Canal showcases risk-taking work and Ramiken Crucible is a small, quirky space. MOMA is more than just post–World War II art in all media; it’s a haven for film buffs, sculpture garden bibliophiles and those who love modern photography and design. The Whitney features more than 3,000 American artists from the 20th and 21st centuries.
Dining: In the world of food, try Nom Wah Tea Parlor in China Town for delectable dim sum. Hot Chocolate? City Bakery, Elephant Bar or Jacques Torres are my go-to parlors and for a cocktail before or after, Gallow Green rooftop, the Bar at the McKittrick Hotel, Juniper and Sweet Afton Bar in Astoria.
