New Theater Thursday

Opening: When the Righteous Triumph by Mark E. Leib Presented by Stageworks
Straz Center, Jaeb Theatre, Tampa
There’s been an awful lot of press surrounding this production, and for good reason. This true story comes back around to us at a key moment in the historical timeline of our lives in this community, and in this country. It so impactfully reminds us about the perils of not taking to heart the lessons of history. In 1960, a little-remembered sit-in at a Tampa Woolworth’s lunch counter sparks – not a riot, or bloodbath, but a civilly negotiated and peaceful outcome that ushered in the era of desegregation. (Sorry, it’s a 65-year-old spoiler.) The extraordinary efforts and forward-looking vision of three men – Tampa’s Mayor, a civil-rights Leader, and a progressive lawyer, come together to facilitate the successful avoidance of the fate so many Southern cities of the time suffered. Time to relearn that lesson. See you tonight at the premier!
Opens Thursday, March 6th runs through Sunday, March 16th

Opening: A Little Night Music Presented by St. Pete Opera
The Palladium, St. Pete
A Sondheim classic comes to the Palladium this weekend presented by our friends at St. Pete Opera. It’s a whirlwind of intrigue centering on the tangled relationships between a middle-aged lawyer, his very young wife, his former lover, and her current paramour. The lush, waltz-inspired score includes the iconic ballad, Send in the Clowns as it weaves a complex web of bittersweet passion, jealousy, and second chances. My POV is, if it’s Sondheim, I’m all in.

The word kimono has a much broader meaning than the Geisha imagery we may imagine. It encompasses clothing not just for women, but for men, girls, and boys. These garments range from exquisite ceremonial robes to simple everyday clothing, many of which follow the same, simple but sophisticated construction.
This exhibition, organized around several interwoven themes, will feature over one hundred extraordinary kimono dating from the late Edo period (1603-1867) through Shōwa era (1926-1989). It will include examples of furisode, the kimono with beautiful, long sleeves worn by young women or stage performers, and men’s juban, the austere but elegant under-kimono often decorated with mythical scenes or wrestlers.
