HCC Ybor City Performing Arts Building, Gallery 114, Tampa

If you are plugged in to the Tampa Bay arts scene, then you are, no doubt, familiar with the work and prolific public art installations of our own Ya La’Ford, an internationally recognized and collected artist. This is a very special solo show hosted by the HCC Art Galleries including a number of new original works. The exhibit opened in August, but tonight is a special reception and artist talkback event. HENGE invites viewers to “reconsider symbols from ancient civilizations as keys for navigating the shapes and patterns of modern life.” Ms. La’Ford is one fascinating individual, so make some time for this opportunity.

Opening – Frankenstein by Mary Shelley & Adapted for the Stage by Nick Dear
Jobsite Theater – Shimberg Playhouse @ Straz Center for the Performing Arts, Tampa

Courtesy of Jobsite Theater

In keeping with a long tradition of Halloween offerings, Jobsite brings the intense and spine-tingling adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to the Shimberg playhouse stage.  “Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s creature (Paul J. Potenza) is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker (Giles Davies). Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the friendless Creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful, determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal.” It’s the perfect Halloween treat for theater lovers.

Come lurk in the shadows of the bus terminal turned art gallery for another intriguing, themed show curated by Chad Mize and Michelle Tannu.  Though the inspiration is “DARK,” a nod to the season, the interpretations are as broad and varied as the imaginations of the many participating artists. They delve into “punk, metal, horror, and sci-fi subcultures to bring you the gritty, grimy, gooey, and even grotesque” exhibition that will be sure to put in the “spirit” of the moment. It’s sure to be another great arts experience from the masters.
