Theater Thursday

The Notebook Musical
The Straz Center, Morsani Hall, Tampa

The Notebook - The Musical

Before it was a smash hit movie, it was a novel – so, of course, the natural progression is the theater. So now, it’s a staged live musical that hits Tampa this weekend. Nicholas Sparks’ 1996 novel—the one that inspired the iconic 2004 movie starring Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling—hit the stage as a musical in 2022 and has a run in the Bay area through May 31. Featuring music from “The Way I Am” songwriter Indgrid Michaelson, who worked on production of the play for seven years, the musical follows the movie in its tale of Noah and Allie, star-crossed lovers, as they navigate throes of dementia.

Now – Sunday, May 31st

Who is Eartha Mae?
Urbanite Theatre, Sarasota

s12_eartha_mae_digital_square_art.png

This production is worth a little trip south to our neighbors in Sarasota. The sharp-witted, glamorous, incomparable Eartha Kitt commands the spotlight. But backstage in her dressing room, in the quiet between songs, she peels back the glitz to reveal Eartha Mae: a girl from the South Carolina cotton fields, orphaned by her mother until an audience adopted her. Told through both story and song, Urbanite Theatre’s first-ever musical production unearths the complex truth behind the icon: “I’m a dirt person. I trust the dirt. I don’t trust diamonds and gold.”

In WHO IS EARTHA MAE?, Jade Wheeler, playwright and performer, brings to life a powerful woman in search of happiness and the roots she never forgets.

Opens Friday, May 29th – Sunday, June 21st

In 2025, we awarded $18,294 in scholarships to 435 students in Pinellas County, and our goal for 2026 is to continue expanding access to our programs, building better leaders and stronger communities.
