You may think you’ve seen one too many Fiddlers, but this acclaimed Broadway revival could change your mind. The Jerry Bock/Sheldon Harnick musical that spawned the song destined to make parents cry at weddings forever (“Sunrise, Sunset”), Fiddler on the Roof has been sending audiences out of the theater humming that tune as well as classics like “If I Were A Rich Man” and “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” ever since the original premiered on Broadway in 1964. Director Bartlett Sher has been praised for his reinventions of  South Pacific and The King and I,  honoring them while making them freshly relevant to contemporary audiences, and he’s apparently done the same thing with Fiddler‘s familiar story of love, tradition and struggle inside a Russian shtetl: the New York Times called the revival “superb” in 2015 and earlier this year the LA Times called the Broadway touring production “powerfully seductive,” singling out for special praise the Israeli theater, film and TV star Yehezkel Lazarov, who play the lead role of Tevye.
