The Best Things You Can Do Today: Walk the Walk, Paint a Mural, Hear a “Waltz”
Three great ways to get involved on this early autumn Saturday:
Come Out St. Pete: Show your rainbow colors (and the customary one-block-long rainbow flag) in a march through St. Pete’s Grand Central neighborhood — or “gayborhood,” if you will, which is a term I apparently came up with, so yes, let’s use it! The parade, a cooler-weather counterpart to June’s St. Pete Pride Parade & Festival, coincides with festivities leading up to National Coming Out Day on Oct. 11. 10 a.m.-noon, beginning at 20th St. & Central Avenue. After the parade there’s a Grand Central Proud Market on Central between 22nd & 31st streets.
You Are Beautiful Community Mural: St. Pete’s SHINE Mural Festival starts today, which means artists from all over the world will be adorning the city’s walls for the next week. Those artists could include you: The public is invited today to paint a positive message on the wall at Oktane Media. It’ll be the first stage in a mural that will be completed Sunday with the installation of a “You Are Beautiful” sign by artist Matthew Hoffman, who has brought his affirming message to cities throughout the U.S. St. Pete’s will be the only such mural in Florida. 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Oktane Media, 2732 Sixth Ave. S.
A Tribute to The Last Waltz: In conjunction with the revelatory exhibition at the Florida Holocaust Museum about rock promoter Bill Graham, who escaped Nazi Germany at the age of 11, local heroes Have Gun Will Travel will recreate The Band’s legendary farewell concert, The Last Waltz, which was organized by Graham in San Francisco in 1976. This is not only a great opportunity to hear a terrific band (plus special guests) play some of the best rock music ever written; it’s also a benefit for the Holocaust Museum. The Palladium, 253 Fifth Ave. N., St. Petersburg, 8 p.m., $25-$45.
