John Cusack’s role as the lovelorn Lloyd Dobler in the 1989 comedy/drama Say Anything… made him a star. Tonight’s your opportunity to say anything to John Cusack.
Described when he first appeared on the scene as embodying a new kind of leading man — “the really cool Everyman with an Alterna-geek bent,” said one imdb.com reviewer — Cusack is as cool as ever at 53. He’ll be introducing a screening of Say Anything tonight at the Straz and taking part in a discussion afterwards. Ask about Say Anything…, of course, but there are so many great Cusack films to talk about, including High Fidelity, Bullets Over Broadway, Grosse Point Blank, Being John Malkovich and my favorite, The Grifters. And I’ve always wondered how one family produces two such equally talented, equally funny, equally nerdy-cool siblings as Cusack and his sister Joan (Working Girl, Toy Story, In & Out, etc.)
So go and see Mr. C. With any luck, he’ll trot out the boombox and play Peter Gabriel for, like, hours.
Screening of Say Anything… with John Cusack, Wed., 7/24, 7:30 p.m., strazcenter.org.
