Weekend Wheels: 2023 Ford Bronco Everglades

Full disclosure here. In my week with Ford’s new special edition Bronco Everglades 4×4, I sadly didn’t take it to the Everglades and wade through gator-infested muddy water 36.4 inches deep. Nor did I get to use the standard 10,000-pound pull capacity Warn Zeon 10 electric winch bolted to the front bumper, to extract myself from the aforementioned 36.4 inches of icky-sticky mud. But had I ventured into that 36.4 inches of muddy water and, without warning, sunk another few inches, I could have taken comfort from knowing the Bronco Everglades comes with its own snorkel. Similar to that piece of swimming apparatus, this boxy piece of plastic runs up the passenger-side windshield allowing the engine to breathe when water is up to the hood. Finally, I didn’t go play in the Everglades because I would have hated to see the Bronco’s lovely gray paintwork and nicely-painted 17-inch wheels with their quite massive 35-inch tires get, well, dirty. Obviously I’m not Ford’s target buyer. But boy was it fun driving it around town and intimidating all those similarly-big-tire’d Jeep Wrangler Rubicons around. But while some buyers will no doubt go play in the goop, I’m predicting the vast majority will use their Bronco Everglades as automotive eye-candy. It’s the same way plenty of pick-up truck owners add enormous wheels and lift kits to the F-150s and Silverados. It’s the same way people spend big bucks on a 200mph supercar and never get it out of first gear. The Everglades is the latest in a line-up of seven special edition Broncos being offered up to adventure-loving fans by Ford. Priced from $54,595, its slots between the $52,820 Wildtrak and $70,095 Raptor. Only offered as a four-door with a removable hardtop roof, it comes standard with Ford’s hardcore Sasquatch offroad package. This includes monster 35-inch Goodyear mud-terrain tires, electronic- locking front and rear axles, HOSS suspension – short for High Performance Off-road Stability Suspension – and Bilstein position-sensitive dampers. Stick numbers to the doors and you could enter the next Baja 1000 offroad desert race and do pretty well. Powering the beast is Ford’s highly-capable 2.3-liter turbocharged four- cylinder packing 300 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque and mated to a 10- speed automatic. To ensure the Bronco can haul itself through any Everglades-grade mud and clamber over the occasional Burmese python that gets in the way, it’s equipped with a GOAT twist knob on the center console. Standing for Goes Over Any Terrain, it lets you select one of seven driveline settings to match the conditions. Pick from normal, eco, sport, slippery, mud/ruts, sand and rock. For our mostly on-road escapades, sport was a blast. Despite the Bronco Everglades looking as wild and rugged as Leo DiCaprio in that The Revenant movie, the way it drives is surprisingly civilized. The turbo four-cylinder is smooth, quiet and packs no shortage of muscle. Coupled with the rapid-fire responses of that 10-speed auto, it can scoot away from the stop light and zip past slower traffic on a two-lane. It also carves curves with confidence thanks to its suprisingly precise and nicely-weighted steering, its coil-sprung independent front suspension, and those Bilstein dampers. It rides smoothly too. But weighing-in at over 5,000 pounds and having the aerodynamics of a shipping container, fuel economy is well, terrible. My mostly highway driving meant an average of 17mpg. And the Bronco’s patchwork of removable plastic roof panels – a total chore to lift off and stow – results in the kind of wind noise you normally get from a Cat 3 hurricane. Yet even if you don’t venture into the Everglades as part of your daily commute to the office, this oversized Tonka toy is just a whole lot of fun to drive. As for using it to ferry the kids to school or soccer practice, or rolling through the Starbucks drive-thru, there’s nothing cooler. But next time I’m getting it dirty.

You immediately get the sense of the grandeur of this home as soon as you enter through the 10-foot tall double steel doors and are greeted by soaring ceilings of 20 1/2 feet -the large spiral staircase inspired by the St. Regis in Atlanta is a show stopper. A breathtaking grand staircase greets you and all of your guests. The living room, visible from the entrance, is also 20 1/2 feet high, centered by a solid stone fireplace, carved and shipped from Turkey. A one-of-a-kind fireplace is the center stone of the formal sitting room. This home has many one-of-a-kind features, such as soundproofing to all exterior walls, a glass elevator with Carrera marble-lined shaft that looks up to a Chihuly-inspired blow-glass fissure, and a theater room with SONOS sound system. Weekend Wheels: 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE 350 4Matic

Electric cars still take my breath away, like a game-winning Tom Brady throw. And we’re talking football throwing here, not an iPad tablet. Their slingshot acceleration, their serene smoothness, their eerie lack of noise, and the overwhelming feeling that you’re driving a true car of the future. All great. And plugging-in, rather than filling up, is also a major attraction. After a joyous week piloting Mercedes’ all-electric 2023 EQE 350 4Matic, my love of ohms, volts, kilowatts and torques was only heightened. As the EQE badge suggests, this is an electric E-Class sedan, though it shares not a nut, bolt or washer with its gas-fueled sibling. Compared to a regular E, the EQE is 2.3 inches longer, 2.5 inches wider, 1.7 inches taller and a whopping 7.1 inches longer between the axles for more cavernous interior space. Yes, some of my fellow reviewers have criticized this new EQE, describing its rounded styling as “dumpling-like”, un-Mercedes, or as stylistic as a bar of Dove soap. I disagree. See it in profile and its body looks as if it was carved by the wind. Which essentially it was. It has a drag coefficient of 0.20 which is slipperier than a Tesla Model S or new Lucid Air. This thing is roughly as streamlined as Michael Phelps in a Speedo LZR rubber swim suit. The bow-shaped roofline is just gorgeous, with that swept-back windshield and coupe-like rear. Love too those muscular shoulders over the rear wheels. And there’s no mistaking that quirky, star-filled, black-paneled grille with the oversized Mercedes three-pointed star, just in case you forgot what you were driving. Terrific 20-inch wheels too, with their five slender spokes and wind-cheating, see-through star-pattern inserts. To get all techie for a moment, the EQE 350 4Matic I’m driving has electric motors front and rear packing a combined 288 horseys and 564 lb-ft of torque. And juiced by a 90.6 kWh battery under the floor, this hefty, 5,488-pound, four-door-with-a-trunk, can rush from standstill to 60mph in just 6.2 seconds and hit a top speed of 130mph. Want more scoot? Check the box for the more potent, dual motor EQE  500 and you’ll have 402 horsepower and 633 torques to play with. On the horizon, there’s even an AMG EQE with up to 677-hp and 738 lb-ft. And while our 350 4Matic’s estimated 305-mile range won’t win it any prizes at electric car finishing school, it’s more than sufficient for the commuting needs of most drivers. Climb aboard and even George Jetson would be wowed by the EQE’s futuristic interior. It’s hard not to be “gob-smacked”, as we say in merrie olde England, by the massive glass screens that make up the dashboard. I love the 12.3-inch driver’s instrument cluster which seems to float in front of the dash. That, and the 17.7-inch touchscreen with its pin-sharp graphics that flows up from the center console like a wave. Me, I wouldn’t pick the slightly dark and oppressive black and gray color scheme of our test car; Kentucky coal mines have more atmosphere. Some of the light-grays with lighter, open-pore woods, look a lot more luxurious and inviting. But there’s space a-plenty here, especially in the back. And back seat traveling is enhanced by the EQE’s quite-amazing panoramic glass roof that runs almost to the rear window to flood the cabin with light. On the road, I found this “starter” EQE to be an absolute delight to drive. No, it’s not pin-you-back-in-the-seat fast, but it’s spookily quiet, rides like it’s floating on air, and handles itself with precision and agility. Prices start at $74,900 for the single-motor EQE 350+, with our EQE 350 4Matic kicking off at $77,900. Opt for the fancy-pants Pinnacle spec, add a few options, and you’ll be looking at over $90,000. Prefer an SUV? Wait until early next year and there’ll be an EQE SUV. Which might just be the EQE
